WikiTree learning week: WikiTree is One tree for all (Collaborative tree model) versus an individual tree model like on Ancestry.

This week on Mondays with Myrt on her You Tube channel, as a panelist in a segment on WikiTree, I learned that I needed to go through my gedcom and compare with existing profiles, co-panelist and WikiTreer extrodinare Hillary suggested doing one branch at a time, in my case I did all the Riddells in my RootsMagic file which were about 100. She mentioned that you need to mark as complete ALL the entries on the GEDCOM compare screen.   I felt a little overwhelmed. It might be easier to do 50 at a time but carefully track which ones you GedCom into Wikitree. Note that if you do this you have a limited amount of time to work on your gedcom. Hillary said that one way to extend this time deadline is to work on it before the initial deadline expires or your GEDCOM will go away. The reason they needed to have people use GEDCOM compare is that there were too many duplicate profiles.

Another way to do this is to search for profiles using the "find" tab. If no profile exists for your family member you can create a profile but you can only do this (as far as I can tell) through the Family Tree page.  At first I was a little confused by the second tab until I discovered that it
shows you what individual profile you are looking at that is connected to you.

I'm putting my tree up on WikiTree.  One of the things I like about connecting profiles to my tree is:

1. I don't have to do all that typing if the profile already exists.

2. I can upload group pictures and identify each person and connect them to a profile (The profile has to exist before you can add it)

3. I'm learning about the preferred Wikitree styles for Profile, Bibliographies and other sections, how to add links, links to other profiles, maps, Wikipedia and FindAGrave.  Its a work in progress for me.
